Grade One

Sword - steps 1,4,8

Technique Basic Positions - As for primary but add - Grouping of the fingers

Basic Movements - As for primary but add - Rock, open pas de bas, and high cut

Grade Two

Practical Fling - steps 1,2,3,4,6,8 (two turns)

Sword - steps 1,2,4,8

Technique Basic Positions - As for grade four

Basic Movements - As for grade four but add - Propelled pivot turn, dancers should count in beats and bars for all movements from primary to grade 2

Elementary

Practical Fling - steps 1, 2,3,5,7,8

Sword - 1,4,5,8

Seann Triubhas - steps 1, 2,6,9,11,12, finish assemble and leap

Strathspey and Reel of Tulloch - Either Intro, strathspey finish 2nd 

Strathspey setting steps 6 Alt. & 3

Reel setting steps 1,9,3, last, (Dancers B and C dance the Highland Reel movement at the commencement of the Tulloch)

Technique Basic Positions - As for grade five

Basic Movements - As for grade five

Musical Knowledge - Explain time, tempo, and rhythm, count in beats and bars movements from grades 3 to 5

Describe and Count - Highland Fling steps 4,5 (both counts); Sword steps 1,4

Student Teacher

Practical

Theory may be asked from previous grades, candidate to select, demonstrate, and explain one of the lesser known dances form the B.A.T.D. book, the Examiner to select one of the lesser known dances from the B.A.T.D. book for the applicant to dance

Fling - 4 steps

Sword - 2 slow and one quick step

Seann Triubhas - 3 slow and one quick step

Technique All basic movements, basic steps from the Associate Members Syllabus excluding all alternates

Associate

Practical

No alternative methods or steps should be danced

Fling - 6 steps

Sword - 3 slow and one quick step

Seann Triubhas - 4 slow and 2 quick steps

Strathspey and Reel of Tulloch

Technique Basic Positions -  Feet, arms, head and fingers

Basic Movements - Bow, hop, spring, assemble, disassemble, change, leap, brush, fling shake, seann triubhas shake, spring points, pas de bas, open pas de bas, high cut in front, balance, traveling balance, rock, round the leg, shedding, toe and heel, back stepping, shuffle, pivot turn, propelled pivot turn, progressive strathspey and reel movements

Basic Steps - Fling - 8 steps, Sword - 6 slow and 1 quick step, Seann Triubhas - 9 slow and 1 quick, Strathspey/highland Reel/Reel of Tulloch

Explain and demonstrate - the introduction, figure of eight, setting steps, and finish of each dance

Musical Knowledge - Give time and tempo for each dance and count in beats and bars

Member

As for the Associate with the addition of:

  • Alternative methods of executing steps in the four dances, where applicable
  • Explain and demonstrate Methods of teaching

 

Fellow

  • Candidates must have held a Membership qualification in this branch for not less than three years.
  • Candidates must be prepared to demonstrate and explain the dances included in the Associates and Members Syllabi, and a deeper knowledge will be required with ability to teach both amateur and professionals at a high level 
  • A complete understanding of fundamental principles is expected and candidate's ability to apply technique will be particularly tested
  • Candidate's ability to discern faults and how to correct faults.
